Vice President Kamala Harris has gone 71 days without holding a press conference or visiting the U.S. border with Mexico after she was tapped by President Biden to be his point person on the record surge in migrants.
Her critics say Harris is considering her political future. This is her highest-profile assignment as vice president and if the crisis is not resolved or improved it could hurt her chances to be president.
Her backers, and the White House, insist that visiting the border is not her mandate. She is working on scoring a political victory with leaders from countries in the Northern Triangle.

But while politics play out in Washington, reports from the border portray a dire situation.
Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agents in Arizona on Monday rescued a wounded woman who was being raped on the Mexican side of the border — before helping Mexican authorities apprehend the assailant, Fox News has learned.
A heartbreaking video also emerged purportedly showing a 5-year-old boy screaming “don’t go!” after being abandoned along the U.S.-Mexico border.
