Daniel Hsu, a U.S. citizen, is finally back in his home of Seattle with his wife and daughter after fighting to escape China for four years.
Hsu committed no crimes but was barred from leaving China, being used as a pawn between the United States and China as his family in the States hoped they would see him again one day, according to the Associated Press.
According to Hsu, he was held in solitary confinement for months and was not allowed to leave the country for the last four years. Hsu told the Associated Press that he was effectively held hostage by Chinese authorities.
The Chinese authorities were seeking to convince Hsu’s father, a former chairman of a government real estate company who allegedly embezzled $63,000 to return to China and face justice. Hsu’s father has said he is innocent and is a target of a political vendetta.
