Boris Johnson came under heavy fire on Wednesday night after he stayed at the COP26 climate-change summit for less than a day despite insisting that the world faced a “colossal” failure if a deal was not agreed.
The Prime Minister arrived at the climate conference in Glasgow on Wednesday afternoon amid grave warnings that the current pledges made by the major economies would not be enough to keep global temperatures at 1.5°C.
In a press conference, Mr Johnson admitted that the negotiations had now entered the “hard yards” and he called for countries to show “more ambition” if they were to meet the targets set in Paris in 2015.
Returning to the summit for a second time, the Prime Minister said that after “a surge of really positive, game-changing announcements” last week, he warned: “The negotiations are getting tough. We’ve only got a few days to go and there is still a huge amount to do.”
And he added: “It is crucial that we show high ambition. The opportunity is there, but the risk is that if we fail to deliver an ambitious COP26 here in Glasgow is colossal.”
