Highly anticipated feature film sequel Downton Abbey: A New Era sees its release date move to late Spring 2022. The movie, also known as Downton Abbey 2, will be a sequel to the first Downton Abbey film, a spinoff of the hugely successful British historical drama TV series of the same name, which hit theaters in 2019 and grossed over $194 million. The plot of this follow-up motion picture will reunite the cast as they gather in the south of France to uncover the mystery of a newly inherited villa.
First airing on British TV network ITV in September 2010, Downton Abbey achieved international success and became the most successful British costume drama since Brideshead Revisited in 1981. The show ran six seasons on ITV in the UK, and PBS in the United States, and wrapped in 2015, following a Christmas Special. The storyline was then continued in the original Downton Abbey movie four years later, and, as reported by Focus Features, the sequel film will hit the UK on April 29, and the US on May 20, two months after its original release date.
