There might be stricter penalties to taunting within the Big 12 come this football season, and no taunt is receiving more attention than the “Horns Down” gesture — one commonly used by Longhorn opponents that mocks the Texas Longhorns’ “Hook ‘Em Horns” hand sign.
Speaking at Big 12 Media Days on Thursday, conference coordinator of officials Greg Burks informed reporters that there will “probably be a penalty” should a player flash the “Horns Down” in a game.
And in what can’t exactly be seen as any surprise, many of those beyond the Forty Acres weren’t exactly fond of the Big 12’s stance, especially those with ties to the University of Oklahoma. A pair of former Sooners stars — quarterback Baker Mayfield and linebacker Kenneth Murray — were among those who took to social media in sharing their thoughts about the conference’s “Horns Down” edict, and only so much time passed before legendary former Oklahoma football head coach Bob Stoops entered the conversation.
Needless to say, it would appear that Stoops could also only roll his eyes upon hearing Burks’ announcement. From his own Twitter account, Stoops’ retweeted Murray’s response while also quote-tweeting critical posts from Mayfield and former Oklahoma OL Creed Humphrey with laughing emojis.
