Former Georgia offensive line coach Matt Luke resigned from his role in February in order to spend more time with his family. In an interview with 247Sports’ Rusty Mansell on the ‘Junkyard Dawgcast,’ Luke gave a deeper insight into his departure.
“For me, it was really tough,” Luke said. “First, coaching football is all I’ve ever done for my entire life. From the time I graduated, I’ve been a ball coach. There’s a lot of fear and nervousness about it because you’ve never done anything else. I just didn’t want to have any regrets. My oldest son is 14. My youngest one is 10. I just didn’t want to have any regrets about seeing them grow up and being there. I’ve been blessed and fortunate in my career. Go out winning a championship. I told Kirby (Smart) I’d help him win one, but it just happened a little faster than I thought.
“Probably the hardest thing was walking into the offensive line room and talking to those players. I do think, when I said, ‘We’re not going anywhere else. My family and I, we’re going to stay here in Athens. I’m just doing this for my family.’ I think they appreciated that and respected that.”
When his resignation was first announced, Luke noted that he wanted to spend more time with family and thanked the Smart family for their support.
