Oklahoma State basks in the glory of victory over Notre Dame in last season’s Fiesta Bowl, and used St. Patrick’s Day this week to mark its territory. The Cowboys’ official Twitter account took a not-so-subtle shot at the Fighting Irish by posting a series of photos of Notre Dame’s mascot with a disappointed look in the end zone during a big play from January’s game.
Oklahoma State trailed by three touchdowns in the first half before holding on for a 37-35 win, thanks to four touchdowns and 371 yards through the air from Spencer Sanders. “This is clearly the biggest win in the history of the school,” Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy told reporters after the Cowboys’ second 12-win season in program history.
The loss for Notre Dame came in Marcus Freeman’s debut as head coach. He took over for Brian Kelly before Christmas following the ex-Notre Dame coach’s departure to LSU.
“They did a good job of getting into some 10 personnel, which they really hadn’t shown much all year and it was good,” Freeman said. “They made some good second-half adjustments offensively and defensively to stop what we were doing offensively and to kind of exploit some things defensively. They did a good job and you gotta give them credit where credit’s due.”
The social media cut may not have embarrassed the Fighting Irish too much, however. Notre Dame’s basketball team beat Rutgers in double overtime in Wednesday’s First Four game and will play Alabama on Friday in the NCAA Tournament’s first round.
