Spring football has arrived with much optimism at South Carolina after the Gamecocks signed a top 10-rated transfer class this offseason and added several much-needed pieces to the puzzle following a better-than-expected first season for Shane Beamer. That said, no one within the program faces a more critical stretch of practices in the coming weeks than offensive coordinator Marcus Satterfield, who’s in a contract year and anxious to prove his value following a disappointing campaign last fall.
The shutout loss to Clemson was a low point and the jeers were so loud by the end of the 2021 season, it forced Beamer’s hand. It was obvious Beamer grew tired of the incessant noise associated with his offense and said as much after the Gamecocks played loose and piled up 543 total yards and 38 points in a bowl win over North Carolina.
“All I’ve heard for a month is how awful they are and what am I doing not firing people and things like that,” Beamer said after getting doused with mayonnaise in Charlotte. “Well, I hope that’s a great answer right there for you, that’s why.”
Good on Beamer for defending Satterfield to the fans, media types and others who often criticized the former Carolina Panthers assistant who returned to the college game to be a first-time OC at the Power Five level. Beamer is not one to call out coaches and in fact, defended Satterfield and his unit’s issues several times.
