Plenty of programs are expected to pursue Oklahoma wide receiver transfer Mario Williams. South Carolina has connections that most schools cannot tout, though.
For one, current Gamecocks head coach Shane Beamer was an assistant with the Sooners for three years before leaving for South Carolina though he likely never crossed paths with Williams on campus. More importantly, former Oklahoma quarterback Spencer Rattler recently transferred to South Carolina.
Now, given his connection with Williams, he is putting on his recruiting cap for the Sooners, taking to Twitter and writing, “come on over fam,” Rattler in a quote-tweet response to Williams’ transfer announcement.
Williams appeared in 11 of the Sooners’ 12 regular-season games, finishing the year with 35 catches for 380 yards and four touchdowns. He signed with Oklahoma in 2021 out of Plant City (Fla.) High School. The 247Sports Composite ranked him as the No. 43 prospect nationally, No. 4 wide receiver and No. 10 prospect in the state of Florida. He was part of an Oklahoma class that ranked 10th nationally in the 247Sports team composite rankings and first in the Big 12.
