Venom: Let There Be Carnagealmost had a very different title. The film, which is a followup to the 2018 hit Venom, continues the story of Tom Hardy’s Eddie Brock and his alien symbiote Venom. The film, which was directed by mo-cap icon Andy Serkis, also stars Woody Harrelson, Michelle Williams, Naomie Harris, Stephen Graham, Reid Scott, and Peggy Lu. The film hit theaters yesterday, taking the number one box office spot on Thursday night. If the numbers continue for the entire weekend, Venom: Let There Be Carnage is poised to knock Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings out of the top spot.
The film’s subtitle Let There Be Carnage was officially announced in the ppring of last year. The title largely exists to acknowledge that the film will be continuing the plot line promised in the post-credits sequence of Venom, which introduced Brock to Woody Harrelson’s character, serial killer Cletus Kasady. In the film, Kasady becomes bonded to the symbiote Carnage and wreaks major havoc across San Francisco. The Let There Be Carnage title might be self-explanatory, but it’s also a reference to the godlike power of this new threat that will force Venom and Eddie to get in sync like never before.
